Experts say an unusually longlasting upwelling of cold ocean water has remained along the Jersey Shore, causing water temperatures to dip.

You can roughly figure out water's temperature by looking for signs that indicate if it's approaching boiling or freezing. You can also use your hand or your elbow to help gauge water temperature. Determining water temperature without a thermometer will not give you a precise degree of heat.

Due to different phenomena, not the least of which is the south wind, warm water gets deflected from our beaches out to sea, replaced by cold, dark water from the icy depths of the Atlantic.

The important thing to note is that small wisps of steam will start to rise from the hot water. The temperature is roughly 165℉–175℉. In this stage, the water bubbles will be the size of small pearls. The rising steam will be stronger.
